Best Gem Expectations Cruel?

More often than not I am finding guild websites including this higher expectation for its applicants. I come here asking you, for those who are in higher progression guilds and pretty serious about theorycrafting/min-maxing/etc, is it reasonable to expect a DPS applicant (or any role) to have obtained the best of the best gems already?

How about thoughts from those not in a hardcore guild - Is it only the diehard guilds expecting this? Should I be intimidated already? I am confident in my capabilities to run with a higher progression guild, I just honestly lack WoW gold funds!!! Should I seek only guilds who do understand that these are difficult items to obtain... Or am I actually missing something!?

Queen's Garnets are quite a rare find as far as I know, and extremely pricey on the AH still. My server (Stormscale - US) listed them 2 nights ago as 9k+ gold. There were only 3 listed. One was even at 50k gold. O.o

My toons have perhaps 9k gold combined, and that is a lot for me!! If I purchase just ONE Queen's Garnet, I'm donezo for a good while til I find the time to farm up more gold!

Why is it that a lot of groups are not understanding of this dilemma? If I app with just 3 JC chimera gems, and the rest all inferno rubies, I get scoffed at. Especially when my BiS items do not have full Queen's Garnets equipped.

Any advice on a fast way for me to acquire such spendy gems? Am I missing something as to how else they are obtained, besides the random drop from the geode or Auction House listings?

On a final note, what's up with expecting an applicant to already have every BiS gear item >.< Seems harsh.... perhaps I will avoid this guild haha.

See if you can figure out who their progression raiders are and then look at their gear on the armory. They probably want people geared as well as they are, or else bringing you slows their progression. If all their raiders are putting in 3x more time than you are and 270k gold is no big thing to them, you're probably not going to fit in very well anyway.

The geodes from Madness always contain an epic gem with red in it (red, orange, or purple), so guilds that have been killing Madness for awhile will have a slightly easier time getting their epic gems. But given that you need around 30, being in full epic gems is pure spend.

Definitely compare yourself to people already in the guild. Make sure you look at more than the best geared, just make sure they have similar kills. Even then epic gems are going to be difficult for most people to have, especially if you're aiming for a step up in progression.

It's silly to make excuses so don't. Use the best available (Inferno Rubies) to you and if you have access to epic gems then use them intelligently in BiS pieces. Even using epic orange/green/purple gems will show effort if they're significantly easier to acquire.

Epic gems should not be a reason to deny an app. Intelligent spec and gearing is rare enough as it is.

At this point I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to have full epic gems. Those things are really expensive, and the gain from using them isn't all that huge. And while the "the gain isn't all that huge" argument can be applied to any enchant or gem on an individual level, most gems and enchants don't cost 7-10k gold a pop. A lot of people can't afford that at all, and it would drain the banks of many who can.

Also, the guild you linked to isn't even to the fights with super hard DPS checks, like H Ultraxion and H Spine. Their next progression fights look to be H Zonozz and H Yorsaj, both of which are more about coordination than about maximum DPS/HPS.

Personally, as a reasonably serious raider I'm filling in my gear with epic gems as I acquire them. Most people I know are doing the same thing.

This guild sounds like one that I wouldn't apply for, on the off-chance I did and was accepted I wouldn't enjoy being a part of it for long.

I'm wondering if the BiS in everything requirement is something left over from before 4.3? I imagine for the top X00 (not sure where the appropriate cut off would be) guilds this would be a more reasonable request to have all epic gems. I know my guild would not demand recruits to be decked out in epic gems, though we may frown on the usage of uncommon gems in an application.

I can't offhand think of a reason for joining a guild if I am already as well-geared as their progression team ....

Anyone (who has got epics) want to comment on 'even using epic orange/green/purple gems will show effort'. Effort yes, but surely it's inferior gemming? For my toon, at least, I would have thought the +40 Int would be better than any hybrid and inferior only to a +50 Int (ceteris paribus)?

Regarding non-red gems for a DPS or healer, it only applies if the gemming is correct. If you need two yellow for your meta then using two epic orange gems makes sense. If you use epic orange/purple/green gems just because they're epic then you're not really understanding what's going on. As I said:

Epic gems should not be a reason to deny an app. Intelligent spec and gearing is rare enough as it is.
