Engineering for Holy Paladins

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking this forum on and off for some time now, but never really got around to creating an account. I've always liked the (seemingly :o) mature environment here, plus it's a healer only forum of course. So for a short introduction, I've been playing a Holy Paladin as my main since about mid TBC, and I'm still enjoying it. :)

Now, my actual question is regarding the usefulness of engineering for us. I've been sporting JC/enchanting since pretty much forever now, and I'm getting a little bored of it. I've also always been quite envious of the fun tools engineering has to offer. In addition to the current state of JC, I'm considering to drop it and finally giving engineering a shot. Dropping enchanting is another option, but I've got quite a few rare formulla's for it which I wouldn't like losing. :(

In DS, most of the fights seem to require short(er) times when a lot of healing is required. This would be quite fitting for the Synapse Springs. I'd use it together with one of my cooldowns, or could possibly even use it with DP for an extra mana boost when I'd need it. Then there's the other fun perks like the Rocket Boots (not as reliable as before though), Parachute Cloak, and probably a whole lot more.

I'd like to have some opinions regarding this, I probably should mention I'm not really that much of a hardcore raider currently, mostly for fun and a laugh. Raiding 2-3 times a week, 10 man. Usually we two-heal the majority of the fights consisting me and a Resto Shaman, with a Resto Druid joining in when required.

Thanks a lot in advance! :)

My holy pally has engineering and I haven't looked back since. I love on-use int buffs and Synapse Springs fits the bill perfectly. I don't find myself using the other engineering tools that much, we got divine protection when we need to run away fast, and I can't think of any raid uses for Parachute Cloak this patch.

One thing to be aware of with Synapse Springs is that it is exclusive with many on-use trinkets. Using the trinket will trigger a 30s CD in Springs (if Springs' CD is currently less than 30) and vice versa. If your trinkets only have equip effects, like Windward Heart, Heart of Unliving, and Seal of the Seven Signs, then it's all good.

The buff from Synapse Springs is not particularly large and has a short cooldown. It will generally work out better when used on cooldown where the average over time matches other profession bonuses. You could try pairing it to Arcane Torrent and Divine Plea for extra regen, but the longer you wait to cast Springs the more regen you forfeit from constant/passive buffs (Replenishment and Meditation).

Larger INT boosts like Fiery Quintessence are more appropriate for saving to use with regen cooldowns. I have not encountered any trinkets this expansion which have been unavailable because my Synapse Springs have been used.

Jeeves and MOLL-E are useful. Boosts are sexy (when they don't fail) and Parachutes are highly situational (Elementium Monstrosity). Synapse Springs are the core boost and are least optimal for healers, who generally prefer a constant stat buff. If you're willing and able to micro manage Springs then go for it. Even with the reduced effectiveness of JC's bonus after adding epic gems, Synapse Springs aren't a great reason to switch and won't give you a big upgrade - if any at all.

TL;DR: I love Engineering, but not for the stat bonus.

Funny you should mention Fiery Quintessence, since it triggers a 30s Springs CD :) (and vice-versa)

I could have sworn the trinket CD is 20 seconds, not 30. But I don't see the fact that it triggers the trinket CD as a problem. This just gives you something to use once you have used your trinket and have to wait for its minute and a half CD (or worse).

@Joe Ego: I would myself disagree about healers preferring constant int to temporary bigger int. If you can control when that temporary buff is, it can help you with the parts of the fight that require heavier healing. Almost all fights have lull phases and intense healing phases. Myself I would rather have 400 extra int when I need it, than have 40-50 int all the time. But I might be in the minority there, idk.

Thanks a lot for the responses everyone!

I decided to bite the bullet yesterday, and switched professions. So far I'm loving it, it's a nice change which is the main reason I considered it in the first place. :) I tested Synapse Spring with Jaws of Defeat which is the the only on-use trinket I use. And they don't trigger a cooldown to each other. Guess that's because it's a mana regen trinket, and not a power up one.

I've yet to try it in a raid, but I'm rather positive about it. I have macro'ed the Synapse Springs together with my other cooldowns, and also a seperate bind for it if I want to use it separately.

Good luck - hope it works out well in raid.
And welcome to Plusheal!

To be fair this site isn't just the best healing resource, it's a wonderful overall WoW fountain of knowledge. Sure, it's centered around the healing classes, but this community is willing to offer any advice to help your overall playstyle. I've read some great healing strategy threads, given dps advice, and asked for tanking tricks to help my healers out.
