How to manage healers as a DPS

Something new I've encountered is I've recently moved over into a DPS role for T12 content. While I'm always willing to heal on my priest I've come across a strange circumstance of managing healers from my rogue.

It feels...strange. I'm not gonna lie, watching healing targets and also maintaining a dps rotation and jumping in with on the fly assignment changes when necessary is...disconcerting. I don't know if this is much of a question, more of just a comment.

A few things I've noticed, there is a huge delay between noticing things (deaths, low health, people standing in crap) as a dps compared as a healer. Luckily I'm blessed with some awesome healers (suffering from the occasional derpiticus not withstanding). I don't see any of the current healers wanting to step up and take over. And truthfully I like the role of making sure they're concerns are heard.

Build up the myelin sheath!

But yeah, you tend to be a step behind because your brain and muscles are going throught he movements of DPS related responsibilities while your eyes will periodically scan your frames. As a healer, your eyes tend to be locked onto the frames while your peripheral vision is used on the encounter and any timers you have up. You're also reacting to the environment by healing your group and the damage that comes in versus mentally maintaining your DPS cycle of abilities.

Its quite a jump really. Good time to designate a number two to cover that stuff for healers.

Try turning off raid frames for a while so you can focus on just yourself :)

Such a great post. I heal on my 2 mains but I have a couple alts that dps. I always have raid frames up and most likely will always do so, even in Heroics/5 mans. I love knowing what is happening the instant it does. I will never give it up! Best of luck to you finding a happy medium:)

Lucky for me my gf who I live with is our Resto Druid so I can get some immediate feed back to put into Ochat! I think it's time to start recording my experiences and work out some kind of system. But yes Matt time to designate a good solid number 2.

I frequently take over the heal-lead role when in a raid. TBH your healers shouldn't depend on you to know what to heal and when. I give healing assignments and tips before the pull but I feel that if they're healing they should know what to do and figure it out.

I am a healer and a healer-organizer. I am not a healer-lead, and sometimes our raid leader (who is shadow/healing) will step in and tell us what to do because it fits so closely with our DPS strategy. What he says goes. It works for us. You might be wondering how this could possibly similar to your situation.

While I really like to organize, plan strategies and make sure that my healers all know what they are doing in a fight, I don't always know what has gone wrong. As a result, I have cultivated relationships with people who don't want to organize but usually see what exactly has gone wrong in their little area of the raid (DPS, healers, tanks). With 25 people there are always several :) They will often tell me in private tells, or when I ask them specifically because I know they know the answer. I will also ask other healers privately how they feel another healer handled their job during the fight to see how it matches up with my own observations. In this way I gather knowledge to add to my own observations about the strengths and weaknesses of each healer, and I use this information to organize us further. We also have a healer channel where our tanks and healers and any interested dps sit and chat about healing and where assignments go out.

Perhaps there are good observers in your raid who can help you gather information you miss either privately or in a healer chat channel?
